2010 Recap
10/02/11 02:10
The inaugural year of the highest stakes dynasty league around was a success. I personally had a blast in this league as I know did some others. The competition was top notch (as you might imagine at this price point), and I look forward to enjoying the group we have here (a very good one) for years to come.
Congratulations first of all to Chris Boudreaux and his team Galaxy Aces for taking down the top prize and a very cool $7,000 (seriously?). Very well done Chris. Galaxy Aces finished the regular season tied for the Rice Division lead with 39 VPs but was edged out by Qwik-6 in points for both the division and the bye spot. As a wildcard, Galaxy Aces rode his three RB horses (Ray Rice, Jamal Charles and Darren McFadden – wow) throughout the year to take the championship. This team is well positioned to repeat again in 2011 led by those horses as well as studs Tom Brady and Brandon Marshall.
Second place and $2,750 went to Invictus, Michael Bronte. After languishing for most of the year near the cellar, Invictus took off starting in Week 8 and reeled off an impressive 6 wins in a row! The team had a slow first half of the year due to injuries to Ryan Grant, Dallas Clark and others but man did the team come together when it counted. The studs driving this team in 2010 were Arian Foster (need I say more?), Big Ben, Mike Wallace and Vernon Davis among others. What was real impressive was Invictus’ in-season management of his lineup, particularly his rag tag bunch of WRs and TEs (or once rag-tag since the group was upgraded significantly by year’s end) which included at times players such as Patrick Crayton, Aaron Hernandez, Malcolm Floyd, Jabar Gaffney and others. With an assortment of first round draft picks in 2011, not only is this team ready to compete again in 2011, but it is also positioned very well for the future.
Third place went to Qwik-6, Joe Jefferson. This team took down the second bye spot going into the playoffs (finishing with 7 wins in a row) and was the top scoring team during the regular season. This team was led by Lesean McCoy, Greg Jennings, Jason Witten, Reggie Wayne, Felix Jones and Matt Schaub. Mike Tolbert was a key in-season acquisition. In addition to the studs mentioned above, Qwik-6 also has up and coming younsters Donald Brown and Tim Tebow to provide an infusion of new blood into the starting lineup from time to time. The year did not end up the way Joe probably hoped it would, but tough to complain when you leave the year with an additional $2,375 in your bank account.
Kurt Kuekes’ Three Arch Bandits won 4th place and was also one of the bye winners for a total take home of $1,375. Great team here, starting with Megatron, Matt Forte, Knowshon Moreno, Roddy White, Santonio Holmes, Zach Miller and even Chris Wells waiting in the wings. Kurt drafted very young during the startup draft, and it paid off with early contributions from Zach Miller and Dustin Keller and then late flurries by Knowshon Moreno and Matt Forte. The few old guys on this team made their contribution as well led by diva extraordinaire Terrell Owens.
Now for the unlucky playoff teams that just missed out on the money. First we have Desert Wind, Rich Dunn. This team was led by studs Miles Austin, Andre Johnson and Marques Colston. What really made this team go though was waiver wire pickups Peyton Hillis and BenJarvus Green-Ellis! Rich told me after the draft that RBs can be found every year, and man, he wasn’t kidding. Unbelievable. Rich’s team sets up nicely for the future with young guns Michael Crabtree and TEs Brandon Pettigrew and Marcedes Lewis. Even Owen Daniels is only 28.
Team Legacy, Scott Atkins, looked to be the favorite early on with performances from Jahvid Best and Chris Johnson, among others, but key injuries to Jahvid Best and more significantly, Sidney Rice and Deangelo Williams derailed this team mid-year. Team Legacy ended up limping into the playoffs and the rest was history. Good news is that the same young pieces are still in place for a run in 2011. Being able to add an AJ Green or Julio Jones (or perhaps a surprise pick) at the 1.2 in this year’s draft should help as well.
Just missing the playoffs by a mere 2 VPs was SKY T 2 HOTTY, Scottie Horton. His studs include Peyton Manning, Steven Jackson, Frank Gore and Mike Williams. Cedric Benson, Deion Branch (nice pickup) and LaDanian Tomlinson aren’t exactly slouches either and should be productive for this team. Kevin Kolb could be a hot property over the summer as well.
Then we have Cornfins, Jeff Tirabassi. His team looked like it would cruise into the playoffs, but hit a snag late in the year (Hakeem Nicks going down with an injury). This team does not lack its studs with Ahmad Bradshaw, Shonn Greene, Larry Fitzgerald and the aforementioned Nicks.
Murphy’s Law, Steve Targonski, made a run near the end, but it was just too late. He may have been able to get into the playoffs if not for Jermichael Finley going down early in the year. Great move picking up Ryan Mathews near the trade deadline and stealing Rashard Mendenhall from yours truly at the beginning of the year. With the nucleus of Aaron Rodgers, Mendenhall and Finley leading the way, this team will be competitive for years to come.
VFL, Dominic Groz and Scott Schwartz, had the distinction of finishing with the 6th highest point total during the regular season but yet finished in 10th place. For a while, this team was the highest scoring team, but it faded near the end due to injuries to studs Antonio Gates, Austin Collie and Adrian Peterson. Great pickups like Brandon Lloyd and Danny Woodhead, the emergence of Mario Manningham and stud QB Drew Brees will help this team quite a bit as it looks to turn things around in 2011.
$ EARN-IN MOUNT VERNON, Carl Stillitano, he's baaack! 2010 was a huge disappointment for one of the preseason favorites to say the least. Still, players like MJD, Wes Welker, Philip Rivers, Michael Turner and Chris Cooley (a stud in this format) should make this team more than competitive in 2011. Chris Ivory was a very nice pickup and Josh Freeman, a backup QB? Well done. Even Tashard Choice could surprise.
And last and most certainly least, Cavalier King Charles, Me. What can I say, the team was not built for 2010. This team is led by Tony Romo, Jon Stewart, Dwayne Bowe, Dez Bryant, Desean Jackson, Vincent Jackson and Vernon Davis. While not quite studs (yet), the Buffalo duo of Spiller/Jackson as well as Superbowl winning RB, James Starks are expected to contribute to this team’s effort in 2011. The #1 rookie pick Mark Ingram along with the 1.3 (Julio Jones? Mikel Leshoure?) and 1.5 (Ryan Williams?) will be welcomed and much needed additions to this team.
